The Missing Bartender
Sheriff Hemlock, worried by the news brought by Shelalu , decides to make a trip to Magnimar to secure more forces for the town’s protection. He deputizes the party and leaves them as the first and last line of defense for Sandpoint.
While the sheriff is gone, a troubling event occurs. Bethana Corwin, a maid who works for Ameiko Kaijitsu, has discovered the Innkeeper is missing, and the only clue is a note sent to her from her brother, Tsuto.
The note reads:
I hope this letter finds you well, and with some free time on your hands, because we’ve got something of a problem. It’s to do with father. Seems that he might have had something to do with Sandpoint’s recent troubles with the goblins, and I didn’t want to bring the matter to the authorities because we both know he’d just weasel his way out of it. You’ve got some pull here in town, though. If you can meet me at the Glassworks at midnight tonight, maybe we can figure out how to make sure he faces the punishment he deserves. Knock twice and then three times more and then once more at the delivery entrance and I’ll let you in. In any case, I don’t have to impress upon you the delicate nature of this request. If news got out, you know these local rubes would assume that you and I were in on the whole thing too, don’t you? They’ve got no honor at all around these parts. I still don’t understand how you can stand to stay here. Anyway, don’t tell anyone about this. There are other complications as well, ones I’d rather talk to you in person about tonight. Don’t be late. Tsuto
Bethana explains the troubled relationship between Ameiko and her brother. Both were treated poorly by their father, but Tsuto more so because he was the product of his mothers infidelity. Lonjiko held to his ancestral traditions and raised the boy in his home as if he were his own, but the two were never truly father and son. When Tsuto’s mother died from a mysterious fall outside the family home, the youth placed all the blame on his supposed father and the two had many public confrontations. Ameiko was the only person alive who could relate to Tsuto even though the two often argued about their father. Bethana is worried that Tsuto is up to no good and she begs the party to check up on Ameiko.
Investigating The Glassworks
Arriving at the Glassworks, the party finds the warehouse oddly silent. No activity can be seen from the outside, but the furnaces seem to be working overtime as black smoke billows from the tall chimneys. Once inside, they find a terrifying sight. Goblins have found their way into the building and have slain the staff. Every room of the Glassworks is in shambles, but none compare to the sight to be found in the large workroom. Lonjiku Kaijitsu is seated and bound beside one of the glass blowing furnaces, multi-colored glass poured over his body. He death must have been horrific. Tsuto seems to have taken vengeance upon his father.
As the party clears the Glassworks of the gobins, they discover a secret passageway that leads to a basement, long since closed off. It is here that the party corners Tsuto. He has subdued Ameiko and tied her up. When the party confronts him he initially resists but then tries to run off down an old smugglers tunnel, long ago sealed off but recently opened to allow the goblins entry. When his attempt to flee is stopped, Tsuto falls back on his last resort and consumed a poison and quickly dies.
Ameiko is rescued, though badly beaten and in need of care. She had refused to join Tsuto’s insane quest for vengeance and he flew into a rage. Now that Tsuto too is dead, all her family has passed. Among Tsuto’s belongings, the party finds a journal that he has been keeping for the last few months. It details his involvement with the Goblins tribes, the assault on Sandpoint, plans for a future raid, the involvement of a number of Goblin heroes and finally, someone he calls “My Love” who is in the process of completing a devilish transformation.
It is decided that Ameiko will return to the Rusty Dragon to recuperate while the party further investigates the tunnels that have recently been opened below the Glassworks.
